  Dinghy Sailing
Dinghy sailing is a great way to learn to sail or to improve sailing ability.  Dinghies are responsive and encourage crew involvement in all aspects of boat handling, sail trim, and tactics.   The skills and knowledge gained are invaluable on any boat.

Dinghy sailing is a good way to get into the sport of sailing as dinghies are relatively low cost, have minimal crew requirements, are easy to move and store, and adaptable to any level of involvement, challenge, skill, or competition desired.

All sailors and classes of dinghies are welcomed.   Join the Temple Reef Sailing Club and share the fun and excitement of dinghy sailing.

Crewing is a good way to become involved  -  show up on a Thursday race night and ask around  (bring a lifejacket, warm clothes, and rain gear).

   Temple Reef Sailing Club
TRSC is located in the building and grounds at the end of Pier 1 at the Marina in Thunder Bay, Ontario.   Sailing occurs either on the protected waters inside the breakwater, or outside on the more open waters of Thunder Bay.

Races are held by TRSC every Thursday evening starting at 6:30pm.   Participation in racing helps develop and hone boat handling and sailing skills.   This is a low stress evening of sailing ... a competitive nature is not required.

A number of more distant regattas are attended by those interested in racing and competition.   The club has previously hosted the Canadian Lightning Championships.

Dinghy cruises, tours, and other races are also undertaken by TRSC members.   There are numerous dinghy sailing options in and surrounding Thunder Bay.

   Dinghy classes
All dinghy classes are welcomed - those most strongly represented are:
  •     Lightning - 19ft, three-person, centreboard spinnaker dinghy
  •     Wayfarer - 16ft, two-person, centreboard spinnaker dinghy

lightning dinghy
The Lightning combines a great balance of sail / tuning adjustments with boat / crew size.   Lightnings are light enough to trailer and small enough to be sailed easily with 3 people.   Lightnings can handle a wide range of sailing conditions well.   The Lightning class is one of the largest multi-crew one-designs in the world.   Lightnings are extremely technical & tactical to race due to a hard-chine hull and advanced sail plan.
Wayfarer dinghy

The Wayfarer originated in 1958 as a multi-purpose dinghy designed for the demands made by the rough waters of English coastal sailing.   Not only a tough and seaworthy cruising dinghy and excellent day-sailer, the Wayfarer is also a competitive and responsive racing dinghy.   The boat is raced with a crew of two, however a family of four can be accommodated, or it can be sailed single-handed.   Over 10,000 Wayfarers have been built in either wood or fiberglass, and the class is very strong in England, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States, with others found throughout the world.
